Autism currently affects 1 in 68 children in the United States and millions more worldwide.

As a professor who teaches music production at Berklee College of Music and Berklee Online, I have grown more and more sure that an understanding of synthesis is essential for keyboardists and producers alike. Synthesizers are a constant presence in contemporary music, and even when we hear organic or acoustic sounds, they’re often performed within software that uses synthesizer parameters to control or modify them. Most importantly, though, learning synthesis gives us a language for timbre and a way to understand sound.

John Mayer and Crosby, Stills & Nash Headline 2nd Benefit Concert
The annual Light Up The Blues Concert benefiting Autism Speaks is a star-studded showcase that inspires solidarity for the often misunderstood condition affecting millions of families. Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN), John Mayer, Don Felder, Brandi Carlile and Chris Stills headlined the show on April 5, alongside several talented artists on the autism spectrum including indie-rock artist Xolie Morra and The Strange Kind, rapper Rio “Soulschocka” Wyles with guest artist Watsky, and cellist Adam Mandela Walden. CSN musician Stephen Stills and his wife Kristen Stills hosted the sold-out event at the newly refurbished Theatre @ the Ace in downtown Los Angeles, bringing together 1,600 people and raising more than $320,000 for the organization. Interview with Robert “Bubby” Lewis
Robert “Bubby” Lewis has played bass for some of the biggest names in today’s music and is currently working on his first solo record 1UP. Instead of going through the usual channels dealing with record labels and publishers to get funding for his new record, Bubby decided to use Kickstarter to help raise funds for recording and mastering. Founded in 2010 by San Clemente musician David “Rocky” Neidhardt III, Rock the Autism is a California-based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing a lifetime of music to those living with autism. The organization offers weekly open sessions during the summers at the San Clemente Boys & Girls Club, and they also put on special assemblies, school programs, and other events throughout the year. Build a Sample Library with the Latest Tunes
If you depend on samples for live performance and remixing, you would probably agree that searching for music is time consuming. In addition to the search itself, you then have to take into consideration the sound quality and the portion of the song that you wish to sample. Do you only need the a cappella without the beat? Perhaps it’s the other way around, and you need the beat without the singing. Or, maybe your set calls for a loop from the original composition. Whatever the scenario, you should consider using a digital record pool to build your sample library. More
