Rising from the Ashes with “Phoenix”

Widely considered a prog-rock supergroup, with members hailing from Yes, King Crimson, ELP and The Buggles, the original lineup of iconic 80s band Asia is back — in top form — and rocking as hard as ever. The band just wrapped up a successful world tour in promotion of their new record (and first release with all the original members in 25 years), “Phoenix.” The album has garnered positive reviews and the enthusiastic approval of longtime fans, and the band has already scheduled more tour dates for 2009.

We sat down with keyboardist Geoff Downes and vocalist/bassist John Wetton before a recent show, and they talked about the reformation of the original band, the evolution of their music, and how Roland and BOSS continue to play a key role in their distinctive sound.

“I find that in my whole arsenal of Roland keyboards, I can get any sound I want,” Downes relates. And as an avid BOSS user, Wetton says, “BOSS pedals have been an integral part of my rig for as long as I can remember. I use them for pretty much everything.”
