Revisiting the TDW-20 Expansion Board

TDW-20

In 2008, Roland released the TDW-20, the eagerly awaited expansion board for the popular TD-20 percussion sound module. Along with adding hundreds of high quality drum and percussion sounds, the TDW-20 also enhances performance features, sound editing capability, data storage, and much more. Let’s explore the TDW-20 Expansion Board!

  • Sounds
Over 300 new sounds, including new kicks, toms, snares, cymbals, percussion and FX.
  • Kits
Fifty new kits PLUS the original 50 TD-20 kits for a total of 100 internal kits! Of course, all 100 kits are fully editable, and you can create your own kits using both internal and expansion sounds.
  • More expressive playability
A wider dynamic range and more responsive hi-hat sound control results in a totally expressive playing experience.
  • Ambience
Fifteen new ambience environments for a total of 25. The new ambiences include several great sounding studio and live rooms.
  • Editing
The flexibility and power of the TD-20 is realized by V-Editing, Roland’s unique icon based interface. Using COSM (Composite Object Sound Modeling), you can easily and intuitively change drum parameters like shell depth, drumhead type, tuning, muffling, cymbal diameter, you can even place and position “virtual” microphones. With the TDW-20 expansion board, the power of V-Editing is enhanced even further for nearly limitless sound creation possibilities.

Some of the TDW-20 V-Edit enhancements include:

  • Kit Resonance — Adjust how the bass drum resonates the entire kit. You can actually hear the overtones of the kit as you play the bass drum with kit resonance on.
  • Add Sound (Snare) — Choose from a tambourine, claps, or a “gate” hit, add it to the rim of the snare and adjust the level of the added sound.
  • Add Sound (Hi-hat) — Along with the tambourine found on the stock TD-20, the TDW-20 can add a cowbell or a cabasa, also with level control.
  • Sizzle — “Beads” can now be added to cymbals in addition to the TD-20’s rivets and chain. Easily control the amount or number of beads or rivets, or adjust the length of the chain to control the amount of sizzle.
  • Mics — The TDW-20 adds a large diameter microphone for the kick for deeper more powerful kick drum sounds.
