RM-700

The Ultimate Digital Piano

RM-700

The new RM-700 represents an exciting new product category for Roland pianos. While offering all the features and applications of the previous KR-Series, it not only improves on these features, but also includes powerful new technologies from other leading Roland products. These include: an 88-note multi-sampled piano powered by Roland’s Sound Source Chip from the HP-Series and RD-Series pianos; the new PHA II Progressive Hammer Action with escapement and Ivory Feel keyboard; enhanced educational applications like Visual Lesson, DigiScore and Wonderland from the successful I-Series pianos; and several visually-appealing features such as Slide Show, Anime and Piano Roll from Roland’s unique VIMA products. Packaged in an elegant, sturdy new cabinet and featuring a new, wider Color Touchscreen LCD, the RM-700 is truly the ultimate “all-in-one” instrument for Real-time Music-making, music creation, and music education. Let’s explore some of the key features and applications.

Classic Design

One of the first things you’ll notice about the RM-700 is its classic, elegant design. Available in either a warm mahogany wood grain or classic satin ebony, it features a traditional “toe-block” design with front legs, much like you would see on a high-end acoustic upright piano. This not only gives the RM-700 a more traditional appearance, but it also adds stability and gives the keyboard a more solid feel. You’ll also appreciate the large music rest, which accommodates wide music scores, as well as the stylish brass music holders to help you manage your music folios. Another nice touch is the “classic” fallboard position, which conceals the power switch and control piano when you’re just playing solo piano. Your friends will hardly notice that the RM-700 is not an acoustic piano!

Superb Tone and Touch

When you sit down to play the RM-700, you’ll immediately be impressed with the Ivory Feel keyboard, which faithfully replicates the look and feel of real ivory white keys and real ebony black keys. The textured key surfaces are made of a material that absorbs oil and moisture from your fingers, giving you better control of the keyboard and more confidence as you play. Inside, the mechanism of Roland’s acclaimed Progressive Hammer Action keyboard is truly counterweighted, with no spring assist, like the mechanism in a grand piano. It even replicates the “escapement” feel on an acoustic grand that occurs when the hammer releases. The result is a natural touch and response that doesn’t require you to adjust your playing technique versus an acoustic piano.

If you’ve never played a Roland digital piano before, you’ll be amazed and delighted by the rich, full, piano tone of the RM-700. Rather than sounding “electronic,” it replicates the tonal and performance characteristics of a concert grand piano. This is a result of our powerful digital technology, which “samples” all 88 notes of the nine-foot grand and captures all its subtle tonal nuances. Of course, the piano is “touch sensitive” and the volume becomes louder the harder you play. More importantly, however, the tone “color” of each note varies naturally with touch, which is essential for the artistic expressivity that’s fundamental to piano playing. You’ll also appreciate the RM-700’s smooth tonal transition from the low range to the high range, thanks to the true 88note sampling.

Ensemble Performance

Besides being a joy to play, the RM-700 enables the special satisfaction of ensemble play in a variety of different ways. One is via Roland’s “Arranger” feature, which provides real-time accompaniments for almost 400 different music styles and genres. Another very appealing application is the ability to play along with either Standard MIDI File music data or real audio .WAV files from a USB memory device or from the optional external CD drive. Naturally, you can vary the tempo and key of SMF files, and manipulate them in many other ways. However, the RM-700 now allows for tempo and key changes from audio .WAV files played from the USB memory. This is supported by a growing library of third-party audio “play-along” content featuring tracks without the piano part, lead instrument, or vocal. However, the RM-700 also offers a “Center Cancel” feature that lets you virtually eliminate the lead instrument or vocal on standard CDs!

Onboard Audio Recording and CD Creation

One of the most powerful new applications of the RM-700 is that it allows you to record audio and easily create your own CDs via the optional external CD Drive. The audio can originate not only from the hundreds onboard sounds and styles, but also from external sources, such as vocals via the dedicated microphone input. Once recorded and saved on your USB memory device, only a few simple steps are needed to finalize and produce a CD.
