BR-1600 owner's manual
Recording a TD-20 V-Pro kit with a VS-2480
VS8F-3 Plug-Ins explained
Using the SI-24 with the VS-2400CD
"Track reverse" on the BR-864?

QUESTION:
I just purchased the BR-1600, and the Owners Manual leaves
a lot to be desired. Simple things like how to add effects to
a recorded track and save it, then add effects to another
track so on and so forth.
Gary D.
ANSWER:
Sometimes those Owner’s Manuals can be confusing. But
there’s still another option: Just call (323) 890-3741
next time you're sitting in front of the BR-1600CD for a
live human to help walk you through whatever operation in
the BR you need help with. (Monday - Friday)

Manual as a searchable PDF.

QUESTION:
I've got a TD-20 V-Pro kit and I wanted to know the best
way to record and mix my playing onto my VS-2480. I don't
know anything about MIDI and I wanted to record the sounds
the kits make and not just MIDI notes.
Rebecca S.
ANSWER:
You don't need to worry about knowing a thing about MIDI
in order to record the sound from your TD-20 into the VS-2480.
Easiest way to do this is simply use 2 analog cables
(these need to be connected from the TD-20's LEFT and RIGHT
master output into the VS-2480s INPUTS (say, use the 1/4"
inputs 9 and 10 or something like that.) OR - if you want to
record each drum sound on its own track inside the VS-2480,
just run 8 cables out of the back of the TD-20 into the
VS-2480. One output for the Kick Drum, one output for the
snare, etc... as set up on the TD-20. The advantage to doing
it this way is you can remix the balance and sound of each
drum after the recording is finished.

QUESTION:
I have a VS-2000CD, and I was thinking about getting one of
the VS8F-3 Cards so I can run some of the plug-ins that are
available. But I’m a bit confused about exactly how many
plug-ins I can run simultaneously per VS8F-3.
Lydia C.
ANSWER:
The total number of plug-ins you can run on one VS8F-3
simultaneously depends on a couple different things, but in
the best case, you can run four mono plug-ins per card.
Each Plug-in has a TYPE designation - either SINGLE or MULTI.
SINGLE type plug-ins: You can use only one plug-in per VS8F-3.
MULTI: You can run it and any other MULTI plug-in from one
VS8F-3.
Some of the plug-ins designated as MULTI can also function
in a “dual-mono” mode. That is, you can insert two completely
different mono instances of it on any two tracks.
Here's how it works: It depends on the plug in itself, and
this is ultimately determined by the developer. For example,
the Roland Vocal Channel Strip Plug in - you can run 2 stereo
instances of this plug in per VS8F-3. Whereas the Roland
Tempo Mapping Effect is designated as SINGLE, so you run only
it on a VS8F-3.
Here are the designations for the ROLAND Plug-Ins:
Means Stereo Only
Means
Dual-Mono (acts like two independent mono processors)
BEST CASE EXAMPLE: From one VS8F-3, you could have the
following:
- Track 1: Insert VOCAL CHANNEL STRIP with "Comp Bass” preset
- Track 7: Insert VOCAL CHANNEL STRIP with "Female Vocal" preset
- Track 9: Insert PRE-AMP MODELING set up to model "Red7"
- Track 14: Insert PRE-AMP MODELING set up to model "N1073"
TYPICAL EXAMPLE: From one VS8F-3, you could have the following:
- Tracks 1 - 10, plus Tracks 14, 15, 21,
22, & 23: All being SENT to the SRV Reverb (Roland Plug-In)
That is: Send some or all of your tracks, in varying amounts,
to the same Reverb. While this is going on, you could also send some or all of
your live INPUTS to the same Reverb! By connecting this SRV
reverb using a "traditional” Send / Return path, you can
get lots of mileage out of it!
Here is the type designation for some of the 3rd Party Plug-Ins:
- Antares AUTOTUNE - SINGLE
- Universal Audio1176 - SINGLE
- Universal AudioLA-2A - MULTI
- t.c. electronics TCR-3000 - SINGLE

QUESTION:
I purchased the SI-24 for use with my VS-2400CD before
Roland officially started offering them as a package.
Is there any type of documentation that will explain
EXACTLY how each and every button/knob/etc of the SI-24
interacts with the VS-2400CD? I currently only use the
faders, and want to know that I'm not missing something.
Jeremy K.
ANSWER:
When the SI-24 is used in tandem with the VS-2400CD, it
becomes a powerful expander with 8 additional analog
preamps and faders, switches, & knobs that can be used
to control parameters in the VS-2400CD. A single R-Bus
cable is all that is needed to provide transport / remote
control, sync capabilities, and digital audio connectivity
between the SI-24 and the VS-2400CD.
Here’s how to connect the SI-24 to the VS-2400CD:
- Connect one end of the R-Bus cable to the SI-24 R-BUS port,
and the other end to the VS-2400CD R- BUS port.
- Power On both the SI-24 and the VS-2400CD.
- On the SI-24, press and hold the System button, and
press [L5] to auto-configure the SI-24.
- Make sure the [MIDI ctrl] button is not lit.
- On the VS-2400CD, hold SHIFT and press F4
[Utility], then press the Page button to select Page 4 of 4.
The “R-BUS” option should appear above F1.
- Press F1 to enter into the R-Bus Configuration screen,
and turn On the R-Bus Remote Control with the jog wheel or mouse of the VS-2400CD.
The SI-24 should now be displayed as the connected device.
- Press HOME to exit and return to the Playlist screen.
The SI-24 will now function as an expander for the VS-2400CD.
The 8 analog XLR or ¼” inputs can be routed to chosen tracks
via the R-Bus inputs in the Easy Routing screen of the
VS-2400CD. The SI-24 faders, buttons, and knobs can now
control functions such as Channel Select, volume, pan, EQ,
channel link, and status of the channels in the VS-2400CD.

QUESTION:
Regarding the BR864, is there a firmware driver update
available to have a 'track reverse' playback option?
What about a repeating drum kit function to repeat a-
or some drum sound(s) endlessly?
W. Frick
ANSWER:
No, there is no way to make the BR-864 play any audio
backwards. However if you have a computer, you can transfer
audio out of the BR-864 via it's USB port to the computer
and maybe find some software there to flip it backwards.
The only way to have "endless" drums is to program your own
custom drum kit Arrangement. Start off with one of the
Preset Arrangements, copy it to a "User" arrangement
(so you can edit it), then tweak it as desired.

QUESTION:
I have a VS-1880, with one VS8F-2
Effects Card, which as you know includes
the Mastering Tool Kits. I do production
and engineering for a number of clients and
have recently been asked to do some mastering
work on a Hip-Hop project. I know a little
bit about mastering, have a good ear, and
have a good idea where my clients want me
to take their tracks. I am curious if you
can give me any pointers on how to utilize
the MTKs and get a professional end product
that can be pressed and sold.
S. Brunsvold
ANSWER:
The easiest, fastest, and best way
to get instantly good results during Mastering
for R&B and Hop Hop? Simply use the MTK
preset called "LoBoost". This one
is perfect for Hip Hop. No need to even tweak
it at all - just make sure the Input side is
hot enough (make sure the white Track Faders
are up at a healthy level) and then set the
Red Master Fader at the 0 dB mark for starters...
then as the track plays, reposition the Red
Master fader so the "Output" levels
are just nearly touching the very top of the
scale. You may need to play with it / mess
with it a few times to figure out how high
you can set the Red Master fader for the hottest
level. Goal: Make the level as hot and high
as possible without any audible distortion.
Listen to the mix very carefully - all the
way through.
