Feeding a VS-2480 from a Mackie mixer
Transferring VS-2480 projects to a PC
Burning with the VS-2400CD
Rhythm track light on the VS-2000CD
VS recorders vs. computer
Plug-ins for the VS-1880?

QUESTION:
I have a Mackie 24 channel 4 bus mixer which I feed all live signals into. At present, I've linked 16 channels directly from the Mackie straight into the 16 TRS inputs on the VS-2480. I am able to record to all of these tracks without any problems and able to play each back individually or simultaneously. My problem is that on the VS-2480 I want to record on the additional tracks 17 - 24 by using the first 8 channels already being fed from the Mackie desk so that they are fed to the VS2480. I've tried pressing the button designated for these channels on the 2480 and get a red record light on the VGA display, but no sound is recorded to tracks 17 - 24 or any meter level changes. I don't seem able to record on these tracks. Am I missing something in the setup stage in order to do this? Do I have to go into the EZ setup to move inserts etc.? Please can you help as I feel I'm losing the benefit of 24-track record and playback.

Mike S.

ANSWER:
First of all - the VS-2480 will only record 16 tracks simultaneously. It cannot record 24 tracks simultaneously. It will playback 24 tracks. The idea is - you lay down the first 16 tracks - perhaps a rhythm section, drums, bass, rhythm guitar, etc... Then you OVERDUB up to 8 more tracks on top of the first 16.

Using the setup you described above, you can record the first 16 tracks to the VS-2480's Tracks 1 - 16. By default, the first 16 physical inputs of the VS-2480 are routed and ready to record on the first 16 tracks. Before you record the first note: Press "IN 1 - 16" above the red master fader, and make sure the white channel faders (which now correspond to the Input Mixer, Channels 1 - 16) are brought up to the 0 dB line. You probably have already done this, but it's a good idea to make sure. Once you've confirmed the Input Mixer Faders are at 0 dB, then simply press "TR 1- 16" to flip back to the Track Faders.

Now you've got the first 16 tracks recorded, right? Press STOP, rewind back, then press PLAY to hear them. Next, set these first 16 tracks STATUS buttons from blinking red (for record) to GREEN for playback. Press TR 17 - 24 to get at the STATUS buttons for tracks 17 -24, and change these to BLINKING RED. Now you should be able to record the sounds from the VS-2480's physical inputs 1 - 8 onto Tracks 17 - 24. (When you create a New Project, the VS-2480 automatically sets the routing up this way.. that is, physical inputs 1 - 8 are connected and ready to be recorded on tracks 1 - 8, but they are ALSO connected and ready to be recorded on tracks 17 - 24.) You can confirm this default routing by pressing the EZ ROUTING button and make sure the lines from INPUT MIXER are connected to the RECORDER.

QUESTION:
I am currently trying to transfer projects to PC, to fine-tune things but then send back to VS-2480 for final mix. How can I do this most quickly and with the best quality?

Seth L.

ANSWER:
The easiest way to get tracks out of the 2480 and into a computer is to use the TRACK EXPORT tool under the CD-RW menu. This will save all your tracks as individual, 24-bit .WAV files on to a CDR. From there, you can just drag and drop them into whatever software you use on the PC.

Another option is to find a DIF-AT24 ADAT Lightpipe interfaces and connect that to the RBUS output of the 2480, and then lightpipe it to the sound card on your computer.

QUESTION:
I own a VS-2400CD. After recording bands and in the process of burning the CD, sometimes the VS-2400CD gives me the message "operation failed", then I get another message "ID not found". Not all the tracks are on the CD. I tried slowing the CD Write Speed, but I sometimes get the same message. The space used on the hard disk is only 1 GB.

Amr H.

ANSWER:
What kind of blank discs are you using? Stick to major brands like Sony, Maxell, TDK, Fuji, etc. Do not use any "no name" or "no label" discs. If you get the error again - best bet is to call Roland Product Support. The "ID NOT FOUND" error message sounds like maybe not all your CD Track Markers are set up. Make sure you do not have any extra CD Track Markers after the last song of the recording. Best thing is to edit all your music down, and then the very last thing, place the CD Track Markers as follows:

  • First song: No CD track marker is needed.
  • 2nd song: Put a CD Track marker down. Might show up as “000c” where the "c" indicates CD Track Marker.
  • 3rd song: Put a CD Track marker down. Might show up as “001c” where the "c" indicates CD Track Marker. etc...
  • Finally - put a CD track marker at the beginning of the last song, but then make sure you REMOVE or delete any markers following.
Too difficult for me to answer this question - it really requires real-time product support. Call (323)890-3741 in the USA, Monday - Friday.

QUESTION:
The Rhythm Track light on my VS-2000CD will not go off. When I bring up the RHYTHM screen, the Audio / Rhythm block is locked on and I cannot select Audio. Help!

James C.

ANSWER:
If you set up a new Project and chose a 24-bit recording mode, the first 12 tracks are audio, and the Rhythm Track will always be on. Thus, the Rhythm light will always be flashing, whether you intend to use the drums or not. If you don’t want to use the drums, just set the STATUS light for tracks 17/18 to unlit (versus to green for playback). That is, you are turning off channel 17/18 of the VS-2000CD's mixer. Finally if you find the blinking RHYTHM light a distraction, maybe try putting a small post-it sticker over it? If you set up a New Project and choose a 16-bit recording mode, then you have the option of choosing whether you want tracks 17 & 18 to be AUDIO (the default) or RHYTHM.

QUESTION:
I am stuck between two worlds. I used to own a VS-880 and recently I switched to computer-based recording for the editing and mastering features. The problem is there are so many problems that come with computer-based recording. My question is, can I achieve the same sound quality and mastering ability with a Roland top of the line workstation as I could with computer programs?

Gary G.

ANSWER:
Absolutely - you can achieve the same (or better!) sound quality with a stand-alone recorder such as a VS-2000CD or a VS-2480 as you can with any computer / software based system. And ditto on the Mastering ability. Of course, with any system (hardware or software) the results will ultimately depend on the ears and the skills of the individual who is operating the controls. Whether those controls are physical knobs or a mouse, the sound quality won't change.

Plus - with the VGA monitor & mouse ability of the VS-2000CD, VS-2400CD, and VS-2480, the user interface is just like using a computer, but without any of the annoying disadvantages like crashing, viruses, spam, etc.. You can pretty much sit down in front of the machine and get your recordings made with out any trauma or problems or hang ups!
QUESTION:
Is Roland making Plug-Ins for the VS-1880?

Steven C.

ANSWER:
Yes, you can now use the Roland Plug-Ins and other 3rd Party Plug Ins in the VS-1880, as well as in the original VS-1680 and VS-1824CD.

You will need to install the VS8F-3 Plug In Effects Card in your V-Studio, and also update the Operating system.
