Streamed live on\u00a0the web from the video studios at Roland headquarters in Los Angeles, the chart<em>&#8211;<\/em>topping\u00a0alternative band performed a\u00a0set of songs from their first two albums.\u00a0After\u00a0the performance, Roland and BOSS Product and Artist Relations Manager Gary Lenaire sat down with the entire band for an exclusive interview, where they talked about their recording process, influences, favorite Roland and BOSS gear, and more. [<em>Laughs.<\/em>] We put more time into it. I didn\u2019t feel like we used anything instrumental that was actually crazy. The slide guitar was something new that we used.<\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> We used a pedal steel and a [Fender] Bass VI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe the songwriting and arranging process and a normal day in the studio for you guys.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> It\u2019s not conventional all\u2014it\u2019s different almost every time. Especially on this record, there were so many different ways. It would just be like a vocal melody first, and then us writing music or production and going back and forth on that. Or like having a song idea and then doing lyrics. I feel like on this record particularly every song was arranged differently. It was never the same formula. It was always different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On a number of your\u00a0songs, there are rhythms that have strong hip-hop roots. Where does that come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> Hip-hop is something we all like.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mikey Margott (bass):<\/em> That\u2019s always been an influence of ours, and something that we\u2019ve worked with since day one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesse, is it true that you originally wanted to be a professional wrestler?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesse Rutherford (vocals):<\/em> Yeah, totally. Great question! [<em>Band laughs.<\/em>] That was what I was going to be before I decided I wanted to be a musician and an artist. That\u2019s what I wanted really bad. I used to watch WWF a lot, but when they changed it to WWE, I kind\u00a0of [started] getting out of it. It just kind of started to go downhill for a little bit. I don\u2019t know. Wrestling\u2019s interesting. It\u2019s kind of like <em>SNL<\/em>: it has its ups and downs, you know? [<em>Band laughs.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think you can take Zach in a cage match?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesse:<\/em> No, I couldn\u2019t take anyone in the band. Who\u00a0are the current artists that you like to listen to?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> I\u2019ve been listening to Timber Timbre, a really cool artist.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> Great band.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesse:<\/em> [Brandon] just showed me Anderson Paak. It\u2019s really good music. I love Lil Wayne. He\u2019s definitely one of my favorites.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mikey:<\/em> Kendrick [Lamar] is the best out now, in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last fall, you guys started touring with the new material. How did that go?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> It was cool. It was really fun.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesse:<\/em> The next tour we\u2019re about to go on, I\u2019m even more excited. [Before] it seemed like we were still learning a lot of [the songs]. Playing them in front of a crowd is a whole different thing that gets added into the equation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re doing\u00a0some American dates, and then you\u2019re off\u00a0to Europe. Where are you going?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> We start in Russia,\u00a0and we end in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> The question is: where <em>aren\u2019t<\/em> we going? I think we\u2019re going everywhere you could possibly go to. We\u2019re going to Ukraine, Czech Republic, Italy. Every nook and cranny I think of Europe.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mikey:<\/em> I\u2019m excited for Italy, because we haven\u2019t gone yet. Jeremy, you use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rolandus.com\/products\/jc-120\/\">JC-120<\/a> Jazz Chorus Amplifier. How does that fit into your rig?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jeremy:<\/em> It takes pedals really well. I actually had more pedals than I have now if you can believe it. I had another pedalboard, and [our tour manager] Alex made me get rid of it. [<em>Band laughs.<\/em>] Going to Russia, it was going to cost way too much money. But the JC-120 just takes pedals I think better than most amps. It\u2019s really nice. And it doesn\u2019t sound like a solid-state amp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the pedals you\u2019re using is the BOSS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/dm-2w\/\">DM-2W<\/a> analog delay. How is that working out for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jeremy:<\/em> That is great for freak-out moments, like when [a song] goes wild. In the song \u201cWiped Out!\u201d we have this really weird bridge, and I use that to have chaotic stuff going on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mikey, you\u2019re using the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/es-8\/\">ES-8<\/a> by BOSS, the effects switcher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Mikey:<\/em> Yes. It\u2019s a dream come true. It really is. It really works good. Playing live, or in any situation, being able to switch [multiple] pedals on, it\u2019s great.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zach, you\u2019re using a handful of BOSS pedals. You\u2019ve got a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/cs-3\/\">compressor<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/dd-7\/\">delay<\/a>, and you also have our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/tu-3\/\">tuner<\/a>, of course. And you have two BOSS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossus.com\/products\/rv-6\/\">reverbs<\/a>. How are you using them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> For some songs, I put my reverb before my compressor so it&#8217;s like super splashy. And [then I put] a little cleaner reverb after [the compressor].<\/p>\n<p><em>Mikey:<\/em> Don\u2019t give away the secrets. How do you use that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> I use it for certain digital percussion parts that we have in songs. I use it to send a track to Jesse [and the band] for our [in-ears], it starts and ends the songs. I actually never used one before I joined this band, so the guys introduced me to it. But I\u2019m pretty sure that I\u2019ve have the same one since I joined the band two years ago.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesse:<\/em> That thing has run our show since we started.<\/p>\n<p><em>Zach:<\/em> So many bands use it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brandon:<\/em> Your pedals are cool, but without the SPD, there\u2019s no show. When I joined the band, I didn\u2019t know about that whole world yet, because I was just playing drums in like garage bands. But when it\u00a0comes to playing bigger shows, you have to run some of the tracks and some of the digital stuff. I\u2019d never played to a click, and that whole world was daunting. I have to play in front of thousands of people and do this? But it\u2019s turned out great, and I really do love it. Known for their seductive melodies, black-and-white images, and suburbia darkness, NBHD is lighting up the charts. The band is composed of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried. In 2013, they\u00a0released their first full-length album, <em>I Love You<\/em>, on\u00a0Columbia Records.
