Interview with Tom Rowlands, May 5th 2005

1. What is a "synthesizer" to you? (what does a "synthesizer" mean to you?)
a means of realizing the sounds in your head, a way of treating sounds from "outside" and a way of having fun and surprising yourself!

2. After you tried and started experimenting with it, what did you think about the V-Synth XT?
i thought it was avery deep machine it seems to combine a lot the advances made in complicated soft synths such as "reactor" but in an easy to use but very powerful interface. i liked the feel of the hardware it reminds of the styling of a system700 which is a good thing.

3. How is programming sounds on the V-Synth XT? (Is programming intuitive and comfortable?)
this is a very powerful synth yet it is relatively easy to program-if you have a basic understanding of synth construction you will be fine. i particularly liked how you can change the routing architecture of the building blocks this really opens the synth out. its great to have the rotary pots to write the step sequencers/modulations-its like having a fully functioning step sequencer built into the synth!

4. We heard that for the Chemical Brothers, step sequencing and step modulators are very important during composing. What do you think about the V-Synth XT's Multi-Step Modulator? Did you find any cool ways of using it? What kind of parameters are you assigning to the Multi-Step Modulator?
yes we use a lot of analog step sequencers as it gets you to think reactively to sound and gets you away from the mouse.these are a great feature of the synth and really works well using the rotary pots to input values its almost like having a step sequencer sitting on top of your modular synth!we are still experimenting with the modulation possibilities but i really like how you can toggle betwwen the "smooth" and the stepped values-very cool.

do you plan to release more cards? a jupiter8 one perhaps!!
