Fifth-Annual Competition Celebrates the Fast-Changing Landscape of Online Radio

Mixcloud, the digital audio streaming platform that’s reinventing radio for listeners and audio creators, has just announced the winners of the 2018 Mixcloud Online Radio Awards. Roland was proud to partner with Mixcloud for the competition, which spanned 29 categories split into four groups: Best Online Music Show, Best Online Radio Station, Best Online Talk Show, and Best Online Radio Personality. The 22-member judging panel was comprised of leading journalists, radio hosts, and entertainment industry veterans, including Roland’s own Nick de Friez, Global AR Product Manager for DJ, dance, and synth products.

You Design the Future — Entry Period Starts Today

Innovative thinkers from around the world are invited to design the digital concert grand piano of the future in the first ever Roland Digital Piano Design Awards. The theme of this design challenge is to unleash a piano design that breaks away from tradition, and each participant’s goal will be to design the digital grand piano of the future. Designers are encouraged to focus on the piano’s look primarily but can propose alternative digital functions and sounds as well. Roland has remained at the forefront of piano innovation since the early 70s and continues its quest to build the ultimate piano with this unique new contest.

Music education online is more accessible than ever via Berklee College of Music’s online extension school.

When you think of music education, you may envision private teachers giving lessons in their homes or a rehearsal room full of students. These learning models are time tested and effective, but unfortunately are not available to all students. However, the dream of the virtual classroom is now a reality and online learning has come of age. According to SkilledUp’s E-learning blog, 46% of college students took at least one online class in the past year. It is predicted that by 2018, half of all classes will be taught online. Music education online is intriguing but also a bit of a mystery, especially for music students. Can you really get the same experience online as you can in a classroom?

Mickey Hart Plays the Sounds of Outer Space

Play Anything with Your Drum Set, Anything…

If we said that you could play the sounds of outer space with your drum set, would you believe us? We had a hard time believing it ourselves, but that’s exactly what Mickey Hart did at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival with Skrillex. Actually, Mickey plays the sounds of the universe all the time through RAMU (Random Access Musical Universe). RAMU is Mickey’s personal sound library that he’s collected over decades. It includes rare and unique percussion instruments from around the world, historical sound bites, speeches, and the sounds of planets. According to Mickey, the planetary sound vibrations are captured from radio satellites, which he then treats for “sonification” to be playable music tones in Ableton Live. Technically, RAMU could be triggered from any MIDI device, however the V-Drums make the articulation of real drumming possible.
